Dry-type transformers, as the name implies, refer to transformers whose cores and windings are not immersed in insulating oil. It mainly relies on air convection for cooling, and the cooling methods are divided into natural air cooling and forced air cooling. When naturally cooled, the transformer can operate continuously for a long time at rated capacity; when forced air cooling, the transformer output capacity can be increased by 50%, which is suitable for intermittent overload operation or emergency overload operation. Dry-type transformers have the characteristics of compact structure, small size, light weight, low noise, no pollution, and maintenance-free, which make them widely used in many fields.

When to use a dry type transformers?

1. In situations with high fire protection requirements: Since dry-type transformers do not use oil as insulating material, the use of dry-type transformers can greatly reduce the risk of fire in situations with high fire protection requirements, such as high-rise buildings, subways and other public places.

2. In situations with high ambient temperature: Oil-immersed transformers need to be cooled with oil. And in situations with high ambient temperature, such as refineries, steel mills and other industrial places, dry-type transformers can better adapt to high temperature environments and increase the service life of transformers.

3. Occasions with high air quality requirements: Oil-immersed transformers will produce harmful gases due to oil leakage or combustion, while dry-type transformers will not produce harmful gases. Therefore, in places with high air quality requirements, such as hospitals, laboratories, etc., the use of dry-type transformers can better ensure environmental safety.

4. Occasions that require easy maintenance: Dry-type transformers do not require oil inspection and replacement. Therefore, in places that require easy maintenance, such as high altitude areas, areas far away from cities, etc., the use of dry-type transformers can be more convenient for maintenance and maintenance.

Main advantages of dry-type transformers

1. The insulation materials used in dry-type transformers are all flame-retardant materials. During operation, if a transformer fails and causes a fire or there is an external fire source, the fire will not be expanded. When selecting a transformer, it can avoid the fire and explosion hazards caused by a large amount of transformer oil inside the oil-immersed transformer once a failure occurs during operation.

2. Dry-type transformers will not have oil leakage problems like oil-immersed transformers, and there will be no problems such as transformer oil aging. Usually, the operation, maintenance and overhaul of dry-type transformers are relatively small, and they can even be maintenance-free.

3. Dry-type transformers are generally installed indoors. They can be installed in the same room with the switch cabinet to reduce the installation area. For places with special requirements, they can also be made into outdoor types, such as installed in box-type substations.

4. Since dry-type transformers are oil-free, they have fewer accessories, no oil storage cabinets, safety airways, and a large number of valves and other components, and no sealing problems.

When choosing dry-type transformers, it is necessary to comprehensively consider factors such as the environmental requirements of the site of use, fire safety requirements, special environmental conditions, etc. With the continuous advancement of technology and the continuous development of the market, dry-type transformers will play an important role in more fields and make greater contributions to my country's power construction and energy transformation.
