How Do You Handle a Transformer Fire?

As a vital equipment in the power system, the safe and stable operation of the transformer plays a key role in the entire power supply. However, transformer fires occur from time to time due to various reasons. Transformer fires not only cause equipment damage and power outages, but may also cause more serious fires, threaten the safety of personnel and cause significant property losses. Therefore, it is very important to understand the causes of transformer fires and master the correct emergency response methods.

Emergency treatment steps for transformer fire

1. Cut off the power supply immediately

When the transformer catches fire, the power supply needs to be cut off immediately. This is because the power supply is still supplied, which may cause a larger fire.

2. Use fire extinguishers to put out the fire

If the fire is small and it is confirmed that the transformer has been powered off, you can use dry powder fire extinguishers, carbon dioxide fire extinguishers and other suitable fire extinguishing equipment to put out the fire. When using a fire extinguisher, be sure to stand in the upwind direction and spray at the root of the flame. For example, for an initial small fire on the transformer shell, a dry powder fire extinguisher can be used to quickly put out the fire.

3. Pour dry sand or water for cooling

If the fire extinguisher cannot put out the fire, you can pour dry sand or water for cooling. However, it should be noted that you should not pour water directly into the transformer, as this may cause a larger fire.

4. Contact the fire department in time

If the fire is too big, call the fire alarm number 119 immediately to report the fire to the fire department. When calling the police, clearly and accurately state the location of the burning transformer, the size of the fire, whether there are people trapped, and other information so that the fire department can make rescue arrangements in time.

5. On-site evacuation and isolation

Quickly organize on-site personnel to evacuate to a safe area to avoid casualties. At the same time, set up a cordon to isolate the fire area to prevent unrelated personnel from entering, avoid the spread of fire and other dangers. For example, in the factory, employees should be guided to evacuate in an orderly manner through the safety passage, and special personnel should be arranged to guard the cordon.

Preventive measures

1. Regular maintenance

Perform regular maintenance and inspection of the transformer, including checking the insulation condition, measuring the winding temperature, checking the oil level and seals, etc., to promptly discover and deal with potential safety hazards.

2. Install protective devices

Install temperature protection, overcurrent protection, short-circuit protection and other devices. When the transformer is abnormal, the power supply can be cut off in time to avoid accidents.

3. Strengthen safety management

Strengthen safety management of the area around the transformer, remove flammable materials, and strictly prohibit dangerous behaviors such as open fire operations near the transformer.

Transformer fire is a serious power accident that requires our high attention. Understanding the cause of the fire and mastering the correct emergency treatment methods and preventive measures can effectively reduce the probability of accidents and losses. In daily operation, it is necessary to strengthen the maintenance and management of transformers, improve the safety awareness and emergency handling capabilities of personnel, and ensure the safe and stable operation of the power system.
